Tuesday came with bad news for Kansas’ Kevin McCullar Jr. as it was announced the player would not be able to play in the upcoming NCAA March Madness Tournament as a result of an injury that he suffered.

“If I Could Play, I Would”

The graduate senior guard who returned to Kansas for an additional season on the team likely to win a national championship gave a moving statement on X following coach Bill Self’s announcement.

After expressing his appreciation for the support that he received from Jayhawk Nation, McCullar explained that he would play if deemed possible.

He said he was “more devastated than anyone” knowing that he would not be able to play and compete next to his team, adding that his college career “has now come to an end”.

The player explained that he gave his all to return to play at a high level, mentioning that he spent 6-7 hours a day with the training staff in the last month.

While he was not given the green light to participate in practice, he competed in games and tried different treatment options.

However, he explained, “it’s simply not where it needs to be to play the game”.

Kevin McCullar finished his moving statement by saying he would support his brothers and KU in Utah “and the rest of this March run!”.

McCullar Was Originally Expected to Play

While the injury stopped him from playing in the Big 12 Conference, it seemed that he would be able to engage in the potential run with the Jayhawks (22-10) during March Madness.

The player has represented a leading scoring option for his team this current season while also bringing his contribution to the game in other ways, with emphasis on his defense skills.

Now, Kansas is left to learn if Graduate senior guard Nicolas Timberlake and freshman guard Elmarko Jackson will be able to replace McCullar.

While the two have already shown great potential, they have never been tested the way they will be tested this week. Get all the best odds for the upcoming tournament at our selection of US sportsbetting sites
