Jalen Hurts scores a touchdown against Detroit Lions during the NFL Season 2025Summary:

  • Philadelphia’s defense shut down Detroit’s high-scoring offense, helping the Eagles escape with a 16–9 win.
  • The Lions went 0-for-5 on fourth down.
  • Standout performances from Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Jaelan Phillips carried the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles keep winning, and at this point, it’s clear it isn’t just because of Jalen Hurts or Saquon Barkley. Detroit learned that the hard way.

The Lions came in with a high-powered offense, but they left frustrated after a 16–9 loss where almost nothing went their way.

The Eagles’ defense has been the real engine behind their climb to the top of the NFC, turning one strong performance after another into wins that have put them in familiar Super Bowl territory.

Names like Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Jaelan Phillips and Nakobe Dean are becoming impossible to ignore, and if Philadelphia keeps this up, you’ll be hearing a lot more about them come February.

Hurts scored the only touchdown of the night in what was otherwise a sluggish outing from the Eagles’ offense. Still, that was enough, thanks to a defense that repeatedly shut down Detroit’s biggest chances.

Coach Sirianni: “Our Team’s Waiting to Win.”

As I watch football today, I saw a lot of teams waiting to lose. Our team’s waiting to win. Because they know how to win. There’s something to be said for that, of knowing how to win.

Philadelphia, now 8–2, is comfortably ahead in the NFC East and closing in on the conference lead. Their numbers on offense haven’t been impressive lately, as Hurts threw for just 135 yards, Barkley managed 83 on the ground, and A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for only 57 receiving yards.

They’ve scored just 26 points across their last two games, yet they’ve managed to win both.

The Lions helped with that. They went 0-for-5 on fourth down and converted only three of 13 third downs, a stunning drop for a team that arrived averaging more than 30 points a game. Sirianni didn’t hide his satisfaction.

Five-for-five the way we look at it. Outstanding.

Carter and Davis swatted down five passes between them. Phillips, added at the trade deadline, delivered five tackles, a sack, and four pressures. Hurts didn’t hesitate to praise them.

One of the best performances I’ve ever seen

Detroit’s biggest misfire came late in the third quarter. After a 42-yard gain to the Eagles’ 22 and then a first-and-goal from the 8, they walked away empty again.

The Eagles capitalized when they reached the red zone themselves. Barkley had a touchdown overturned on review, but Hurts finished the job on a one-yard tush push just before halftime, giving Philadelphia a 13–6 lead. Jake Elliott’s three field goals rounded out the scoring on their side.

Cooper DeJean grabbed his first regular-season interception, jumping a Goff pass in the first quarter.

Next week, the Lions return home to face the Giants. The Eagles head to Dallas for another divisional showdown.
