Despite rallying the Boston Red Sox to a monumental World Series triumph barely a year ago, team president Dave Dombrowski has been sacked due to apparent flaws found in the team’s offseason roster building.

Red Sox principal owner John W. Henry and Chairman Tom Werner chose to part ways with Dombrowski, who has been with the team since 2015.

The decision came about after Boston suffered yet another loss in its series of embarrassing postseason campaign fumbles.

The announcement shocked the public after the Red Sox had a devastating 10-5 defeat at the hand of the Yankees.

However, those who are diehard fans of the Red Sox are not very shocked as they expected Dombrowski to get his walking papers.

Differences In Roster Building Strategy

The Red Sox beat the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series to claim their fourth championship trophy in 15 years. Owner Henry lauded Dombrowski’s efforts after the historic win, conveying interest in signing him up for a long-term deal.

In the offseason, Henry expressed intent to building a stronger Red Sox team by enlisting new blood, saying some changes were necessary and it wouldn’t hurt the team. The 69-year-old principal had highlighted that he didn’t see much merit in bringing back a team in its entirety for every succeeding season – even though they had previously won a World Series.

Dombrowski did not share the same views as Henry and decided to take the opposite by using a bulk of the team’s offseason resources to renew deals with Red Sox’s aging stalwarts’ 36-year-old left fielder Steve Pearce and 29-year-old pitcher Nathan Eovaldi.

The Red Sox’s mature roster has proven to be a liability in 2019, swelling Boston’s payroll with overpaid veterans that have seen better playing days. Currently eight matches behind the second wild-card spot and 17.5 games back in the AL East, the Red Sox’s disappointing display in 2019 has brought attention on Dombrowski’s shortsightedness.

Fails To Field Winning Boston Red Sox Team

In the span of less than a year, Dombrowski’s team has gone from 108 wins and a World Series trophy to having a slim chance at the playoffs despite a record $228-million payroll.

Chris Sale was signed to a five-year $145-million extension in the spring, despite still having a year in his existing contract. However, the 30-year-old pitcher had to bow out in August due to persistent elbow inflammation.

The decision to go against the Chairman’s suggestions and a string of poor results meant that Dombrowski had to be sacked!
