Buffalo appeared to have thrown away its opportunity when running back James Cook fumbled early in overtime. The Rams managed to recover deep in their own territory, but Los Angeles failed to capitalize.
After Matthew Stafford moved the Rams into field-goal range, Rousseau got a hand on Harrison Mevis’ attempt, allowing Allen to return to the field.
Allen responded with scrambles of 19 and 13 yards to move Buffalo into scoring range. Head coach Joe Brady opted to send Bass out for the kick on second down, and the kicker made no mistake.
That’s the beautiful thing about football: You get another drive. All you can do is keep moving forward. You’re hoping someone on defense or special teams can make a play, and that’s what happened. Greg Rousseau made a play.
The victory also marked Josh Allen‘s first career win in overtime.
The game appeared headed for a Buffalo victory in regulation when Cook scored with 1:39 remaining, putting the Bills ahead. Stafford and the Rams had other ideas, however, as Kyren Williams powered into the end zone from one yard out with four seconds left to force overtime.
Stafford finished with 383 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Puka Nacua caught a career-high 17 passes for 138 yards and a score. Davante Adams added two touchdown receptions, tying Larry Fitzgerald for sixth place on the NFL’s all-time list with 121 scoring catches.
Rams coach Sean McVay was particularly frustrated with the team’s special teams performance. Mevis missed two field-goal attempts, including the blocked kick in overtime, and McVay questioned his own decision to take a conservative approach before the attempt.
The kicking game, with our PAT, field goal (unit), not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight.
Cook rushed for 111 yards before his costly fumble, while Allen repeatedly escaped the Rams’ pass rush to extend drives. Buffalo finished with 234 rushing yards, helping the team survive a high-scoring contest against one of the league’s most productive passing offenses.
The Bills now turn their attention to Sunday’s road game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Rams will return home to face the Arizona Cardinals.
