J.J. McCarthySummary:

  • Rookie J.J. McCarthy overcame a pick-6 and a slow start to lead the Minnesota Vikings to a 27-24 comeback win against the Chicago Bears.
  • Caleb Williams looked sharp early, completing his first 10 passes and rushing for a touchdown.
  • McCarthy threw two late touchdown passes and added a rushing score, validating Minnesota’s decision to make him their starter.

The Minnesota Vikings walked away from Monday night with plenty of clarity about rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The Chicago Bears, meanwhile, may have left Soldier Field with more questions than answers about Caleb Williams.

McCarthy’s first NFL start didn’t need to be flawless from beginning to end, but it had to be strong. After an ugly start that included a pick-6, the Vikings trailed by double digits going into the fourth quarter.

However, the rookie bounced back, throwing two late touchdown passes and adding a rushing score to lead Minnesota to a 27-24 comeback win. By the final whistle, the 22-year-old’s stat line read 13 completions on 20 attempts for 143 yards, most of it from crunch time, proving his resilience after three difficult quarters.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell praising the rookie’s poise,

McCarthy had every reason to shrink in the moment, especially after the pick 6. Instead, he rallied to account for three touchdowns and the win

Williams Cooled Off

For much of the night, it looked like Williams would be the headline, as the No. 1 overall pick from last year’s draft started sharp, completing his first 10 throws and even running in a touchdown.

With Chicago ahead 17-6 late in the third quarter, it felt like the Bears were in control. Williams added another scoring drive with just over two minutes left, but by then, the damage had been done.

The matchup between Williams and McCarthy was no accident, since the NFL chose to slot Vikings-Bears into a Week 1 primetime game to highlight two highly touted quarterbacks from the 2024 NFL Draft class.

Williams entered as the more polished prospect, while McCarthy was making his long-awaited debut after missing all of last season with a knee injury. The Vikings had moved on from Sam Darnold despite a 14-win year, betting their future on McCarthy.

Early on, that gamble looked shaky. McCarthy had only 48 passing yards in the first half, and the pick-6 to Nahshon Wright in the third quarter seemed like the nail in the coffin.

Yet Chicago’s offense stalled, punting six times in the second half, and the Vikings seized the opening. McCarthy hit Justin Jefferson for a short touchdown, then found Aaron Jones on a 27-yard strike after a controversial penalty extended the drive. He sealed the night with a 14-yard rushing score, sprinting around the edge as O’Connell erupted on the sideline.

For Minnesota, it was validation of their decision to hand McCarthy the keys. For Chicago, the night offered little clarity.

Williams showed flashes, but as O’Connell hinted, “It’s way too early to be overly concerned”. Still, Bears fans might be uneasy because while Williams cooled off, McCarthy stole the spotlight.
