united kingdomThe controversial European Super League surfaced this week and threatened to change the face of global football only to disintegrate within three days as all of the Premier League clubs that joined the rebel league quickly backtracked on their decision after experiencing massive backlash from British fans and a personal rebuke from UK PM Boris Johnson.

While talk of the European Super League has fizzled out rather quickly, there are now rumours floating around that a potential British Super League will temporarily replace the European Super League.

The top six teams in the Premier League believe that the format of the Premier League needs to change immediately or it will suffer a huge blow financially and otherwise. Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are pushing to open up the Premier League and turn it into the British Super League that will bring in new teams from across the border.

The current emphasis is to get two of the biggest teams in the Scottish Premier League to move over to the British Super League. Rangers F.C and Celtic F.C are being wooed to join the British Super League and get the chance to pull in revenues from the multi-billion dollar Premier League competition.

The two teams have an easier path to qualify for the Champions League if they stay with the Scottish Premier League. The financial package is the main temptation for Rangers F.C and Celtic F.C to quit and join the British Super League. However, other teams in the Scottish Premier League are not opposing this move as the departure of Rangers F.C and Celtic F.C, will make it a lot easier for them to qualify for the Champions League.

European Super League On The Backburner

Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid was named as the first president of the European Super League. While a lot of football fans believe the European Super League is finished, Perez remains defiant claiming that Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona have not yet withdrawn from the league.

Perez claimed the Super League was not destroyed like many have suggested but is currently on the backburner. He said that multiple teams had signed contracts with the European Super League and could not exit the contract just like that. Perez also said he was open to having talks with UEFA to work things out and come back with a new Super League model.
