Summary:
- A wrong handoff in the final minutes led to the Chicago Bears’ 25-24 victory against the Washington Commanders.
- The Commanders’ slow start and early turnovers didn’t help the team.
- The defense gave up a 55-yard touchdown run to D’Andre Swift, but they couldn’t close out.
While one could easily blame the Washington Commanders’ 25-25 loss to the Chicago Bears on the fumbled exchange between Jayden Daniels and Jacory Croskey-Merritt at the end, it wasn’t just about that one bad play.
Washington’s 25–24 loss wasn’t about one bad play, but a collection of smaller breakdowns, including missed tackles, turnovers, and missed opportunities, that eventually added up especially over a football game.
As the Commanders held on to their late lead as the ball hit the turf, the Bears jumped on it at their own 44 with just over three minutes to go. The mistake helped Caleb Williams move the Bears into field goal range, and Jake Moody didn’t waste the chance to drill the game-winner.
Now sitting at 3–3, the Commanders are forced to figure out how to put an end to their pattern of inconsistency before their schedule becomes even tougher.
Slow starts have been a recurring problem this season, and Monday was no different. Washington fell behind 13–0 before it got on the board.
Early turnovers weren’t of much help either, as Jaquan Brisker intercepted Daniels on the first drive, and Croskey-Merritt fumbled on the first play of the next one. Meanwhile, the defense gave up 381 total yards and 6.5 yards per play, as they couldn’t contain Williams or the Bears’ ground game.
D’Andre Swift’s 55-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was the worst of several big gains that burned them.

The Commanders ran for 125 yards but struggled to find consistency, while their defense, usually solid against the run, gave up 145 yards on the ground. Swift did most of the damage with 108 yards on 19 carries, his best performance of the season.
Still, the team hung around, and Daniels found Chris Moore for a touchdown in the second quarter, while Luke McCaffrey later caught his third touchdown of the season to give Washington its first lead.
A blocked field goal by Daron Payne and a short touchdown pass to Zach Ertz had Washington up by eight late in the game.
Then came Swift’s long touchdown run that swung momentum back to Chicago. Washington’s next two possessions didn’t go anywhere, and, on their fate was sealed on their final one.
It was a frustrating ending to a game that felt winnable. The Commanders showed flashes of promise, but until they learn to protect the ball and play a full four quarters, they’ll keep finding themselves on the wrong end of these close finishes.
