The San Francisco Giants are once again looking for a new manager. On Monday, President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey announced that Bob Melvin had been fired after two seasons in charge. San Francisco finished 81–81 this year, a slight bump from last season but still short of the MLB playoffs for the fourth straight time.
Posey said,
Just looking to find a different voice that can take us in a different direction
The move came only months after Posey picked up Melvin’s option for 2026, a show of confidence that ultimately didn’t hold. Melvin had ended the season on Sunday with a 4–0 win over Colorado but admitted he wasn’t sure about his future.
It is what it is. We’ll see what the next day brings
The search for a replacement immediately sparked speculation about Bruce Bochy, who just wrapped up his contract with Texas. By the afternoon, Rangers GM Chris Young confirmed Bochy’s departure, noting he had offered him an advisory role but nothing more.
Posey, who played under Bochy during the Giants’ championship run, didn’t commit either way.
I don’t know what his status is yet so I can’t speak on that
For Posey, the standard is clear.
It’s definitely not ideal but unfortunately we talked about it a lot what the standards are for the Giants and we have high standards. We’ve got to get back to a place where we’re getting in the playoffs, we’re making runs in playoffs. That’s what our fan base deserves, that’s what the city deserves.
Melvin’s departure stings for players who respected him. Third baseman Matt Chapman, who also played for him in Oakland, said,
You know how I feel about BoMel, I loved him. He’s been my manager for I guess seven years… He’s been steady for us, he’s always honest with the players, he has our back.
Pitcher Logan Webb echoed the sentiment, saying the team’s struggles were on the players, not their manager.
BoMel’s a great leader of men. It’s been amazing. I think BoMel is great
For Melvin, who grew up in Palo Alto and once caught for the Giants, managing in San Francisco was the dream job. That makes this ending all the harder. “It wasn’t enjoyable. I knew how much this job meant to Bob”, Posey said.
The Giants now turn the page, with Posey promising no quick decisions ahead of the 2026 MLB season: “I want to make sure we get it right”.
